St. John once said that if he were to tell all that Jesus did, the whole world could not contain the books that would be written. He is the beginning and the perfection of all creation, including us; all things were created by him, through him, and for him; in him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. He is the king of the world, the light of the world, the life of the world, the judge of the world, and the hope of the world. He is the Son of God, fully God and fully man. His defining characteristic is love, which is shown perfectly on the cross, on which he reconciled sinners to God when as man he bore our sin and its penalty, and through which he gives us his righteousness when we trust in him. When he rose bodily from the grave he defeated death and in his ascent into heaven has paved the way for us to approach God without fear, without shame, and without hesitation. He promises that he will come again and that we too will rise from our graves and join him in a new heavens and a new earth. This promise and his own resurrection provide the foundation for the extraordinary hope and joy experienced by all who truly trust in him. And he has given us the Holy Spirit to bring all this about in us today.
