All of our children deserve a stable family home life, one of the strongest predictors of a child’s success in school and the foundation for both career and personal growth. Ensuring that Seminole County children have this opportunity for success is crucial. Today a Seminole County Collaborative known as Pathways to Home brings together Partner Agencies, its Board of Advisers, and an ever-expanding list of private and public supporters dedicated to pooling resources to end homelessness for families with children in Seminole County.
At the end of the 2009 – 2010 school year, Seminole County had identified over 1,300 students as homeless. At the end of the 2010-2011 school year, over 1700 Seminole County Public School students were homeless, and is expected to reach 2,000 by year’s end. We currently have no shelters in Seminole County where families can stay together.
Pathways to Home
The initiative entitled Pathways to Home was created with the mission of increasing family stability and resiliency by guiding families to services that best meet their real needs. In 2009, Seminole County government officials, faith-based organizations, and most of the leaders in the social service arena saw both the need and the opportunity to create a systematic and comprehensive collaborative approach to coordinating and integrating services to increase our community’s impact on this growing challenge of families in need.St. Peter’s has a full-time case manager that supports 12 Pathways families. We provide Comprehensive Case Management for a one year period of time. Our case manager uses the Family Team Conferencing Model to provide outreach for distressed families to meet basic needs and spiritual guidance for personal development and support for the family unit. We bring to bear the resources of the Church and the Pathways to Home collaborative in order to provide the best opportunity for success. St. Peter’s also specializes in mental health counseling and conflict mediation services to assist in strengthening the family foundation.
